good reading light

I’m celebrating National Poetry Month by writing and reading poetry, every day. My poetry project is grows out of a list of things that make me happy. I made this list  on the 30th of March.

Today is day fifteen: good reading light

When my mom insisted
“turn on the light”
I resisted.

Declaring independence
avoiding connection to
the root of my existence

For years, I buried the likeness
delaying reckoning
with the obvious.

Now, looking at my past
I marvel
at how her brilliance was miscast.

As much as I hate to admit
like mother, like daughter
I love a room well lit.

  1. Such an interesting revelation of your mother/ daughter relationship. Resistance. And then the coming around to understanding. Mothers know best.
